Description: Workshops prepare educators to teach Fermilab classroom units and instructional activities with their students. They are taught by master teachers. A teacher who wishes to bring students to Fermilab for the field trip programs—Beauty and Charm, From Beneath the Ashes and Particles and Prairies —must take a workshop to qualify. Registration is required for all workshops.
Most workshops are held in the summer.

21-25Summer Secondary Physics Institutes - Physics of the 20th and 21st Centuries for Teachers
Description: This institute is one of four on physics content and classroom techniques for high school teachers. (None is a prerequisite for any other.) Master teachers will lead discussion and exploration of modern physics and the work of Fermilab. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to learn from Fermilab physicists and tour selected Fermilab sites. This institute will be especially useful for new teachers and teachers teaching out-of field.
 Time: 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
 Grades: 9 - 12
 Fee: $400
Graduate credit: 2 semester hours can be arranged.
ISBE recertification: 5 CEUs 25 CPDUs

21-23The Prairie - Our Heartland Teacher Workshop for Teachers
Description: What was the Midwest like 200 years ago? Tens of thousands of square miles of glorious color, waves of grass, and diverse animal populations inhabited what we now call home. How—and why—has this amazing ecosystem changed? Using observation, experience, inquiry, and critical thinking, convey the story of the prairie and westward expansion to your students. This program incorporates science, language arts, mathematics, social science, and more! Immerse yourself in The Prairie, Our Heartland. Awaken to a whole new world!

Participants who are not getting credit will leave at 3:00 PM.

 Time: 8:00 AM-3:00 PM
 Grades: 3 - 5
 Fee: $175
Graduate credit: 2 semester hours can be arranged.
ISBE recertification: 6 CEUs 18 CPDUs

28-2Summer Secondary Physics Institutes - Electricity and Magnetism for Teachers
Description: This institute is one of four on physics content and classroom experiments and techniques for high school teachers. (None is a prerequisite for any other.) Master teachers will lead discussion and exploration of electricity and magnetism and effective pedagogy and labora-tory experiences for use in participantsÕ own classrooms. Laboratory experiments will in-clude work with both traditional equipment and computer-based data-taking devices. In ad-dition, participants will have an opportunity to learn from Fermilab physicists and tour selected Fermilab sites. This institute will be especially useful for new teachers and teachers teaching out-of field.

19-23Beauty and Charm Teacher Workshop for Teachers
Description: Beauty and Charm at Fermilab is an engaging, exciting unit of study for grades 6-9 that culminates in a field trip to Fermilab. The unit is aligned with the Learning Standards and the National Science Education Standards, and feature themes such as "Methods of Science," "Seeing the Unseen," and the "Human Element" of science. In the Beauty and Charm workshop, instructors will provide ideas for teaching the unit and suggestions for supplementary materials. After attending the workshop and teaching the unit, participants may bring their students to Fermilab for a field trip to the Lederman Science Center and a special guided tour of Wilson Hall, the Linear Accelerator building, and the Main Control Room. Each field trip also includes a question-and-answer session with a Fermilab scientist.

26-30Particles and Prairies Teacher Workshop for Teachers
Description: Three ecosystems in one workshop: prairie, savanna and stream. Look at abiotic and biotic aspects of these three systems. Learn biological principles and how to use standard ecologic measurement techiniques to teach students to assess and compare these different habitats. Background information and hands-on classroom activities will give the teacher confidence to use this unit in the classroom. Participants of this workshop are eligible to bring their students to Fermilab for a docent-led field trip. This is a great way to get motivated for a new school year.
