Who I am: I am a rising fourth year from the University of Virginia. I am majoring in Physics with a concentration in computational physics. I am planning to attend graduate school after I graduate, but I am undecided as to where.
Research: The NOvA experiment is designed to study neutrinos, but the detectors also observe muons (amongst other particles). There is a large background of cosmic muons (downward going) that come from showers when cosmic radiation ionizes in the atmosphere. My goal is to identify and reject the cosmic muons in order to precisely identify upward going muons. These upward going muons may be (in some theories) a signature of WIMP annihilations in the center of the Sun or the Earth.
