Report: DES/DESI Experiment (pdf)
Research: I worked on data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) in preparation for the Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) experiment that will use optical spectra of galaxies and quasars will be taken as part of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. I studied the image processing software that is meant to pick out the bright galaxies by using it on DES data and then comparing the results to a "truth" table from established catalogs. The object was to compare and analyze the mismatches, with a view to eventually improve the image processing to get reliable results. I learned to do things with python and use Jupyter notebooks.I also created a ecosystem demonstration for my 8th grade Ecosystem unit using a simulation, I created both a Scratch and Jupiter version.
